The Union County Community Garden Coalition is a new initiative sponsored by the Union County Fiscal Court to create partnerships between local organizations, businesses, and interested individuals to build community gardens at schools, churches, senior citizen's centers, parks, and low income areas. We are utilizing our county's ties to a rich agricultural history and longstanding gardening tradition to create a garden education program with the help of farmers and master gardeners, agriculture extension agents, librarians, high school teachers, local job corps employees and students, and other interested individuals.
The Coalition is developing programs that will teach people how to grow, prepare, and preserve their own food and save money in the process; connect gardeners and garden sites with volunteers and needy families; introduce interested community members to gardening practices; and provide more opportunities for healthy lifestyles. We are also participating in Union County Jail’s Inmate Garden program to help offset the jail’s food service costs and provides inmates with valuable work time and skill training.
The Coalition is a unique partnership between the Union County Fiscal Court and the Appalachian Coal Country Team (http://www.coalcountryteam.org/) - sponsored by the AmeriCorps-VISTA (Volunteer In Service To America) program and the Office of Surface Mining.
